IATA & Geoscience Ireland Sign MoU to Connect Alberta and Irish Geoscience

2 min read

On September 15, 2026, the Ireland Alberta Trade Association and Geoscience Ireland signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the UCD Club in Dublin. The agreement commits both organizations to advancing bilateral opportunities in trade, investment, talent and professional exchange between Alberta and Ireland.

About Geoscience Ireland

Geoscience Ireland is an industry group representing Ireland’s geoscience sector, with member companies active in geology, geothermal energy, geospatial surveying, environmental services, mining and digital mapping. It supports its members in developing international markets and has a strong track record of connecting them with industry, academic institutions, research centres and government stakeholders around the world. It works closely with the relevant Irish government departments on that work.

Why It Matters for Alberta

Alberta and Ireland share more geoscience ground than most people realize. Alberta’s expertise in subsurface energy, mining and geospatial work lines up directly with the capabilities of Geoscience Ireland’s members, and geothermal energy is an emerging priority on both sides of the Atlantic. The MoU gives companies, professionals and institutions in both places a clear channel to find each other.

Building on an Established Relationship

The agreement formalizes a relationship that has been growing for some time. IATA and Geoscience Ireland have collaborated on market study visits, including the Global Energy Show in Calgary with a focus on geothermal energy, and Geoscience Ireland has been a generous source of market information and expertise.

The first priority is mutual recognition of professional accreditations. Making it easier for geoscience professionals to work between Ireland and Alberta would remove a real barrier for both the talent and the companies that need it. IATA and Geoscience Ireland will also keep each other informed of upcoming events and opportunities in both markets.

“Geoscience Ireland has supported IATA and the Alberta companies we’ve introduced to them throughout this year. Signing this MoU in Dublin was a chance to thank them in person and to commit to putting the partnership to work.”
Laureen Regan, Founder & President, IATA

Thank you to Sean Finlay, Director of Geoscience Ireland, John McGrane, Managing Director, and Gearóid Ó Riain for their support and for a memorable signing.
